Are there laws against having someone listen in on your conversations when your visiting in their home?

My family and I recently moved from Florida to a small town in Nebraska. We stayed with relatives for 6 weeks because our place was not ready yet. Without our knowledge our private conversations were being electronically monitored as well as being watched by closed circuit camera. We knew of at least 2 cameras. However we did not…nor were we told of the highly sensitive listening devices obviously hidden through out the house. Every single private conversation inside the house was subject to ease dropping.
Is this legal?

  1. Just Google It says:

    That is perfectly legal in their own home.

    I would think since it was their home that it was perfectly legal, but I am not sure.

  3. NONAME says:

    no, and what the hell is wrong with your relatives?

    let me clarify.
    Legal to do, not legal enough to use in a court of law.

    if they told you about it yes…. however if they didnt tell you about ALL of them then now… best talk to a lawyer, but if you got nothing to hide, why does it bother you?

    It comes down to an expectation of privacy. It was their home and you said you did have knowledge of two cameras. It would depend on their use of the conversations captured and if they tried to damage your life or reputation in some way. That’s slander. So if you sued, it could go either way in court. It’s up to a jury or judge to decide. Because if you were plotting something criminal they could use that against you. So like I said, it could go either way depending on how you argue your rights. And there actually is no specific right in the constitution where you have a legal right to privacy. You won’t find those words in there. Just from unreasonable searches and seizures.

    no but it can be a sin if it is about you than yes

  7. Mr. Big says:

    You have some weird *** relatives, and no its not illegal. However you can still accidentally damage their equipment.

    yes it is.

  9. STEVEN F says:

    You KNEW about 2 cameras. If that is true, you SHOULD have assumed EVERYTHING in the house was recorded absent PROOF it wasn’t. In order to CLAIM the recording was illegal, you would have to argue you had a ‘reasonable expectation of privacy’. In ‘common’ areas of the house, you have none. In YOUR bedroom and the bathroom, you may have a case.

    Hi Laid Up,

    I would grab your own spy stuff at and then invite them over to your new place for a weekend. What goes around comes around! Good luck to you!
