Does the amount of surveillance at your work/school get you worried?

Like the other day the vending machine gave me two Cherry Pepsi’s cause I freaked and pressed the button 8 times a second. I look up and there is a camera staring me in the face. Or I will be waiting for the elevator and a camera is there too. I can’t hide from them and I know they will trip me up on something dumb!

So do the cameras get you kinda paranoid?

We have surveillance cameras at work, but they are only outside the doors to see who comes in and out, I guess.
I think our problem is just the opposite of yours – not ENOUGH security surveillance. The thieves and vandals in the area around my jobsite seem to know just where the cameras are and how to avoid detection despite an expensive security system. In a period of one week, back in February, one employee had the tires stolen right off of her parked (and locked-up) bicycle, and a couple of days later, I arrived at work early and found four little trees from the landscaping on the side of the building uprooted and thrown out into the middle of the street! Yet NONE of that was caught on video because it all happened OUT of range of the security cameras, which were focused on the area of the front doors, ONLY!
The camera you mentioned at the vending machines does not seem too unreasonable – vending machines ARE frequent targets of theft and vandalism, after all. However, I CAN understand your discomfort with the massive proliferation of cameras everywhere. (Those traffic cameras at intersections are what make ME the most uncomfortable.)

All too often, sensible and necessary rules and precautions can be taken to insane extremes, and when THAT happens, it should be a matter of concern to EVERYONE!
(I just finished reading an article about the case of a 13-year-old girl being strip-searched by school authorities in Arizona who were searching for Ibuprofin in accordance with their school’s no tolerance for drugs policy! Can you imagine that – a 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL STRIP-SEARCGED about IBUPROFIN!?!? Have you EVER heard of ANYTHING so insane!?!)
There is NO question that personal freedom is a precious – and seriously endangered – commodity that needs to be fiercely protected, while, at the same time, the innocent victims need to be protected from the harmful acts of personal freedom committed by the negative and anti-social among us. It is a delicate balance that is not always easy to maintain – but it MUST be maintained, nonetheless.
