Are surveillance cameras really needed for home use? We have a customer who absolutely thinks so. We’ll call him Rock because he doesn’t want his name used in this newsletter. Rock lives in a suburb about 25 miles west of Chicago. About seven months ago strange things started to happen to his house. First he noticed a strange car parked in front of his house late at night. But being in the suburb he lived in, and with a relatively low rate of crime he figured it was nothing so he didn’t pay any attention to it. But then funny things started to happen. Like the morning he woke up to find his mail box damaged which is located at the front of the house by the street curb.
It looked like somebody hit it with a baseball bat or something similar. Rock figured it was some neighborhood kids looking for some malicious fun. So Rock went out and bought a new mail box and installed it on the mail box pole. But a week later he woke up to find his mail box was damaged again. So this time he called the police and made a police report.
Not being happy with just beating up the mail box, this time the mystery attacker blew up the mail box with what police guess was an M80 type of firecracker or bigger. So Rock had enough. He bought a wireless bullet camera and an embedded stand alone DVR from us and installed the camera and hooked up the receiver to the DVR.
He didn’t have to wait long before the mystery attacker showed up again. This time with the camera watching and the DVR recording, the attacker was caught trying to start a fire at the back of his camper he had parked in his driveway.
So to make a long story short, police viewed the DVR recording and the suspect was identified and charged. After interviewing the suspect, police said the man though Rock was with his ex girlfriend, and admitted to the attacks on Rock’s mail box including using a quarter stick of dynamite to blow up Rock’s mail box. Rock is happily married and has a little boy. It was clearly a case of mistaken identity by a mentally disturbed man. Thanks to the surveillance system Rock bought, it could have been a lot worse.
