One of the most common questions that I get asked on a regular basis is which type of surveillance camera is better, wired or wireless? The answer that I give to this question is always the same, neither one is better nor worse, it all depends on your situation.

Rather than go into a long, drawn out lesson on surveillance cameras, I’ll just give you what I consider to be some of the pros and cons of both wired and wireless security cameras.

Wireless cameras
The obvious benefit of a wireless surveillance camera is that it can be placed almost anywhere without needing to figure out how to conveniently run the connecting cables. For many applications, such as covert surveillance, this can be a necessity. An example of this would be a hidden nanny cam for your kids’ room that’s disguised as a stuffed animal. Let’s face it; a teddy bear with a cable coming out of its paw is hardly an inconspicuous hidden camera.

The down side to a wireless surveillance camera is just as obvious. Wireless cameras need to have their battery packs frequently recharged for them to work. Also depending on how far away the wireless receiver is from the camera, the video signal could be subjected to interference from other electronic devices in the area.

Wired cameras
The pros and cons of a wired surveillance camera is pretty much the opposite of the wireless ones. On the plus side, wired cameras don’t need to be frequently recharged, so once they’re installed, you can leave them alone and they’ll continue to work for you day in and day out. Also, because the camera is directly connected to the monitor or recording device, the signal is not subject to video interference from outside sources. The down side is that they are limited by the length and placement of the connecting cables. It may not be practical to have 300 or 400 feet of wire running through your building from the camera to the monitor.

All in all, there are benefits as well as down sides to both wired and wireless surveillance cameras. So instead of asking which one works better, the only question that you really need to ask yourself is which one will work better for your particular situation.

What is a hidden camera? There’s so many different types that the definition would be limited to any camera that records video or still images in such a manner that a normal person wouldn’t notice the camera. This could be as simple as a standard video camera set up behind a few tree limbs. However, they can be built into much more complex devices so that the normal person would never even notice it.

Where could someone hide a camera? Quite literally anywhere! A button on a jacket or a pack of cigarettes could house the lens of camera. With technology constantly reducing the size of electronics, cameras now exist that are small enough to fit on the end of your thumbnail. We’ll take a look at a few of the devices found on the market today.

1) Wireless (hidden) cameras which transmit video:

These cameras are quickly becoming obsolete because they need to transmit the video over the air, thus requiring the end user to be within range of the transmitter (usually within 100 yards) in order to receive the signal. The camera requires (at minimum) battery power. One can also easily find these transmitting devices with a wireless video camera detector. Additionally, one can also use a receiver to pick up the signal and see what the camera is transmitting.

2) Wired cameras:

Wired cameras (hidden or not) or just that-they require a wire to send the video down, as well as power (either battery or AC). At the other end of the wire is either a screen to view the video or a recording device. These require installation of the wiring and are generally thought of as a more permanent fixture, although one could use them for a temporary operation. These are more easily found since the wire would be a give-away when looking for such a device. Since these cameras do NOT transmit video over the air, a wireless camera detector is useless against such devices. A lens based hidden camera finder or an Advanced Video Camera Finder (one that searches for a small signal emitted by video cameras) would aid in the search for such a device, however, a thorough sweep of a room looking for wires would also prove to be advantageous.

3) Wireless cameras that store video locally:

These cameras are by far becoming the superior product of choice. They could be built into a clock/radio alarm and use the power from the AC power cord (which also powers the clock), or they could be found in bird houses or discrete black boxes without any cords (and thus run on battery power). There’s really no limit on where they could be concealed. Keep in mind that all cameras require a lens, and thus the only real defense against such a camera would be a lens based hidden camera finder (although there are a few models with a coating that attempts to defeat the lens finders) or an Advanced Video Camera Finder. Look through hidden cameras sold online to familiarize yourself with some of the more common objects that pre-built hidden cameras come in and investigate anything that looks suspicious.

Do keep in mind the following points:

* All cameras require power (either battery or via an AC cord).
* Those running on battery power will occasionally require new batteries or recharging.
* All cameras require a means to transmit (real time) or store video for viewing.
* Cameras which store video will require someone to retrieve the system in order to view the video
* Camera lenses are only a matter of millimeters in size, thus making them easy to place in a variety of objects
